It’s to understand what made them special in the first place and preserve that, while removing the technical barriers that prevent people from enjoying them today." Implications: Preservation vs. Modernization A central theme of SNEG’s philosophy is the distinction between "preservation" and "remastering." In the eyes of many purists, changing a game is a cardinal sin. However, SNEG argues that keeping a game in its "original" state—complete with broken resolutions, save-game bugs, and lack of peripheral support—is not preservation; it’s abandonment. "For us, preservation is not simply about keeping the original files on a server," Shchuiko asserts. "It’s about making sure people can actually continue to experience the game." The team operates with a "light touch." They aim to remove technical friction—such as bugs that could potentially damage hardware or cause system instability—without altering the game’s core identity. They avoid the temptation to "reinvent" the game, opting instead to fix what the original developers likely would have fixed themselves had they possessed the technology of 2026.
