The Physical Approach: Maia

In Maia, the simulation focuses on the harsh physical realities of an alien world. Colonists do not merely have simple bars for hunger and fatigue; they possess roughly 50 individual needs that dictate their mental health.

Maia tracks environmental factors such as:

  • Atmospheric composition: Oxygen, carbon dioxide, and toxic gas levels.
  • Lux levels: The precise brightness and color temperature of the lighting in a room.

"My approach here is to treat player learning and player attention as precious, limited resources and ‘spend’ them accordingly," Sylvester explains. "If any mechanic would require any amount of player learning or player attention, I try very hard to redesign it so it can be optional, or set things up so it only applies in some situations, or so it can be introduced gradually."

The UX Communication Bottleneck

For Simon Roth, the creator of Maia, the hardest task was not writing the complex AI routines, but finding a way to translate those routines to the player without cluttering the screen with spreadsheets.

"Presenting more information to the player has been the biggest difficulty in the game," Roth admits. "The thing is with the AI, it’s so incredibly complex now."

While Maia uses detailed character animations to convey basic biological states like exhaustion or physical pain, subtle psychological issues required a more creative solution: procedural emails.

When colonists in Maia notice structural issues or experience deep psychological distress, they write simulated emails to the player’s command terminal.

"If they’ve got a skill for a thing and they spot a potential problem in the base, they can suggest doing something to the player, and the player can either give them a yes or no answer," says Roth. "It shows the AI are more self-aware than you realized."
